Tiburon Engineering’s new Smart-Shift™ line of automatic 2-speed fishing reels represents the finest and newest innovation in big game fishing reel technology. Smart-Shift™ reels are high quality machined billet reels that feature a patented automatic transmission that shifts gears on demand. Smart-Shift™ reels include two optimum gear ratios that are designed to give an angler a variety of advantages when fighting a fish.

    When a trophy fish is pulling hard and running deep, the reel shifts into low gear to give the angler the cranking power he needs to gain line on his opponent. Conversely, when that fish comes up jumping or makes a hard charge towards the boat, the reel automatically shifts back into high gear and immediately begins picking up slack line in a hurry to avoid a thrown hook or a foul wrapped fish. The difference between Smart-Shift™ reels and all the other 2-speed reels is that Smart-Shift™ reels instantly sense the difference in line tension and automatically shift into the appropriate gear, thus giving the angler the advantage in every fish encounter.   

    Another unique feature of Smart-Shift™ reels is that they are the only reels on the market today that utilize the patented and proven T-Bar™ reel handle as standard equipment. T-Bar™ reel handles from Area Rule Engineering give the angler maximum power and unmatched comfort through their unique ergonomically correct design. The angle of the handle fits the angler’s natural grip and wrist angle to relieve fatigue and muscle strain.

    Smart-Shift™ reels are constructed of the finest proven materials available. The reel frame, spool, side plates and various other structural parts of the reel are machined from aircraft grade aluminum alloy billet material. All of the gears, fasteners and hardware components, such as screws, springs, anti-reverse dogs, harness lugs, ball bearings and dowel pins, are made of stainless steel or aluminum bronze. Other high-tech materials used in the construction of our reels are Delrin, Rulon and Nylon, which are corrosion proof materials that play an important part in wear resistance and performance. 

     There are 6 Smart-Shift™ reel models available that are designed to handle line weights from 8 to 80-lb test. The oversize drag system is strong enough, even in our smaller size reels,  to allow the angler to utilize today’s strong super braid lines, yet smooth enough to control big fish on light tackle.

How does the Smart Shift know when to shift gears?
The patent pending Smart Shift™ transmission is driven on the high gear side with a friction clutch, much like the drag system in the reel. When a fighting fish pulls hard enough against the spool to overcome the friction exerted by the high gear clutch, the mechanism allows the reel to disengage from the high gear and engage the low gear driver. When the resistance level against the high gear clutch decreases, the clutch regains it’s friction hold on the high gear and speeds up the reel. All you have to do is turn the handle!

Can I regulate when the Smart Shift reel shifts gears?
Yes! The shift point, or amount of resistance required to cause the Smart Shift™ transmission to shift gears, can be regulated by the angler to suit his personal taste or to meet the demands of the situation. Changing the shift point is done with the star wheel located on the right side of the reel and can be accomplished while you are fighting a fish. Back it off to stay in low gear longer, or roll it forward to maintain high gear advantage. Even though the star wheel looks like a drag setting device, it does not have any effect on the drag setting of the reel. Smart Shift™ reels are lever drag reels that have a preset knob and drag lever to control the amount of drag placed on the line and spool.
